- 260 000 customers
- Years of impunity
- Thousands of victims
- 30% of the victims were kids/teens
To understand better this case, we must speak of a phenomenon in South Korea: the “Molka” which is filming the intimacy of women without their knowledge. The government is actively fighting the phenomenon by sending city hall workers to check if there is a camera in the public toilets to prevent posters. Stolen videos of private parts (for example the contents of mini-cameras installed without the knowledge of customers in hotels) were posted by the thousands every day on a site opened in 1999, Soranet. The site closed after an investigation revealed that this traffic in intimate images had brought the authors around 5,000 euros.
The March 19, 2020 arrest of Cho-joo-bin nicknamed “baskat” / “doctor” on the count of Production, distribution of sexual exploitation. On “Telegram” a social network: at least 103 people, including 26 minors (up to elementary school students) were identified as victims when the investigation started. According to victims testimonies, there have been several ways of trapping victims, but the modus operandi is the same: social hacking. They stole the identities and personal informations of young women and kids, much of which is freely uploaded to social media as part of an everyday life, to be used to trap and blackmail them. Then, for those who gave in, the blackmail began. But another way of trapping, described by victims, was also discovered during the investigation: to look for young women and kids who posted intimate photos of them, to contact them by posing as police officers saying that it was in the context of a police investigation, for example, that their naked photos were published on another site. They then trapped the victims with a “fishing” attack (well known technique of piracy).
Number one suspect : Cho ju bin, he allegedly attracted young women with part-time job offers, then blackmailed them into creating and then sending very explicit pornographic videos of themselves. The manipulation and blackmail part comes. They then demand that the victims makes pornographic videos on the Telegram platform under penalty of being exposed publicly (contact details and photos or even threatening to come to her house to attack them). They play it at a highly perverted way because at first, the authors of this blackmail say that it is only a question of obeying their orders for a short period of time, such as a week, then promising to leave them alone. But it’s just the opposite. Possessing even more material to blackmail these young teenagers (and also young adult women), they continued their demands which went even further in the sordid, going from pornographic video to video where the victims had to film themselves eating their excrement or scarify themselves (write the word slave on their body with a blade). Those who resisted or who wanted to put an end to this blackmail, at first, saw their names, photos, address and name of the school they attended published in the rooms. Then, customers of the rooms were asked to go and rape them. The rapes were filmed and then broadcast in these so-called rooms. This served as an example for other young girls who wanted to do the same and get out of the disgusting circle in which they were trapped.
The worst activities took place in paid rooms: videos of organized rapes , women’s nipples cut out,, scissor blades inserted into the vaginaor drinking toilet water. At least 260,000 users have accessed these discussion forums, paying for content with cryptocurrencies. Over 220 people accused of digital sex crimes have been arrested including Cho ju bin. As we speak, we are convinced this is still going on with only different people leading the blackmail and selling the pedoporn on Telegram and elsewhere…
UPDATE – On November 26, 2020, the trial of Cho Ju-bin network will take place. The accused was sentenced to 40 years in prison. The court added that in view of the seriousness of the crimes and the number of victims, Mr. Cho should be “kept away from society for a long period of time”. The court explained his heavy sentence by the “irreparable harm” caused to victims “reduced to slavery”. Among his accomplices, five of them received sentences ranging from seven to fifteen years in prison.
