DILWORTH SCHOOLD – Pedo Lair [1970-2021]

Dilworth School, a private school for underprivileged boys aged 9 to 18, has been singled out by a collective of over 150 victims

It will never end… A new case of sexual abuse in a school shakes New Zealand. The Dilworth School, a private school that welcomes boys from disadvantaged backgrounds, from 9 to 18 years old, has been singled out by a collective of more than 150 victims who accuse some members of its staff of mainly physical and emotional abuse, such as bullying and excessive corporal punishment, but unfortunately also sexual abuse. Accusations on facts dating back to 1970. 11 men are implicated by the so-called Old Boys, the victims, former students. Only 11? 40 years of abuse and sexual abuse perpetrated by only a dozen pedos on more than 150 children? Hard to believe. In short, whatever the case, these are 150 victims too many, 150 boys who could have been spared if the law of silence had not once again been the watchword. This police investigation, known as Operation Beverly, began with the interviews of the victims in 2019, the arrests began in September 2020.

Dilworth School is a private, Anglican-affiliated school located in the central Auckland suburb of Epsom. Since 1906, it has traditionally provided an elite education for boys from disadvantaged backgrounds. The school is in fact a large campus divided into 3 zones: a senior, junior and rural campus, in which nearly 600 children (258 identified as Pacific Islanders and 155 as Maoris) are affiliated according to their age. The management is provided by a charitable trust, the Dilworth Trust Board, whose board of directors is chaired by Aaron Snodgrass. According to their claim, the funds raised allow families whose children are in school to pay no fees and some children to receive scholarships. This charity had $908 million in assets (real estate and other investments) in 2019. Huge! That same year, there was $87 million in total revenue and just under $30 million in expenses. 57 million in profit … What was all that money for? Well, there are operating expenses, salaries of the employees, scholarships for the students, okay but from there to cost 30 million… And then the school is endowed with a great national notoriety, that would possibly explain certain donations, but 87 million, we remain doubtful. There is no trace of any donation, so we won’t know anything more.
Several of his former students have become sports stars – All Black rugby players James Arlidge and Riki Hoeata, as well as professional boxer David Aloua – or politicians – Member of Parliament Jami-Lee Ross and Mike Moore, a former Prime Minister – which is quite surprising. Or not, since we know that most of the time, access to fame or power is accompanied by mind control and sexual abuse. No valid argument to support this hypothesis, but it’s still worth asking the question. A beautiful showcase at first sight but behind the curtain it was horror. Ted Dawe, an author, was head of English at Dilworth between 1989 and 2002; he describes an unhealthy atmosphere, constant doubts about everything that went on there. “It was more like an orphanage than a school. The relationships were unhealthy and close…The kids were incredibly needy and very, very eager to curry favor…These were not things I saw – I couldn’t have seen them – they were just things I assumed were going on around me, but we were never told about.” He also speaks of sudden departures of old staff on a recurring basis. An Old Boy from the 1970s testifies to the same phenomenon. He adds, as do other former students that bullying was pervasive, sometimes sadistic. All were traumatized.” It took me about 10 years to stop dreaming about it. These scumbags protected each other by threatening victims and witnesses of their abuse with retaliation or even expulsion or worse: “You don’t talk to anyone at any time or you’re dead meat.” Pedagogy you say? THE PEDOS

Ross Douglas Browne became assistant scoutmaster in the late 1960s and then chaplain in Dilworth from 1979 to 2006, when he resigned. He was also the director for some 50 years of the Auckland Central Gang Show, a musical theater production linked to the scouts, and a priest at St. Luke’s Church in Manurewa. He has been charged with 23 counts involving 13 boys, including the assault of a boy under 16 in 1991, a boy under 12 in 1994, a boy under 16 between January 1, 1996 and December 31, 1997, and a boy under 16 in 2002. We can imagine that he was not “satisfied” with 23 boys to satisfy his dirty vice during 50 years…

Graeme Charles Lindsay, a resident of Levin, confessed to the assaults that took place in the 1970s. Listed as a doctor, he appears to have been employed in a research center of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry in the region, working for the New Zealand government. He must have kept some connections, so we’ll see what sentence is in store for him. He faces three counts of indecent assault for events that allegedly occurred in 1973 and 1975, involving two boys aged 10 to 13.

Ian Robert Wilson, The former assistant principal, 69, was charged with indecent assault on five students between 1975 and 1992 – some more than once and over a period of several years. He pleaded guilty to assaulting a boy under the age of 16 on 12 separate occasions between 1979 and 1982 and to enticing another boy under the age of 16 to commit an indecent act toward him in 1977. He was sentenced to 3 years and 7 months in prison. Several victims mention their complaints about the abuse they suffered but he always turned a deaf ear, he was also protecting his boyfriends. His lawyer Steve Cullen declared that Wilson was a predator and that he accepted it and took responsibility for it. Yes, but the damage is done you sick bastard! “He was approached by a staff member who introduced him to a pattern of behavior at school that was degenerate, and he fell for it, but that is in no way an excuse and he accepts and acknowledges it.” Wilson had started at Dilworth in 1971 and became an assistant principal after serving in numerous leadership positions at the school. He was also a founding member of the National Venturers Council (Scouting) as a Northland representative. He then served as Scoutmaster at Dilworth for several years before becoming Group Leader in 1978.

Alister Grant Harlow, 61, is an accountant in the town of Hillsborough. He was assistant house master of Erin House in 1985 and 1986 before becoming house master between 1987 and 1992. He was then assistant house master of Gibson House on the junior campus in 1993 and 1994, and heavily involved in running the school’s scout group. He is accused of brutally assaulting a boy over the age of 16 in 1990. Only one victim?? Are you kidding? He pleaded, of course, not guilty.

Richard Charles Galloway is a former scout master. He is now deceased (which is a good thing since he will not make any more victims but he will not have been judged …). In addition to the accusations of sexual abuse in Dilworth, Galloway was accused of having provided cannabis to 2 boys. To better abuse them? Galloway, an out gay man, was a 25-year air traffic controller and a long-time volunteer staff member of New Zealand’s LGBTQI phone counseling service, OUTLINE, and owner of an art rental business called Vermilion Art Limited. He was also a member of the Auckland Feathers Badminton Club, a club founded for the LGBTQI community.

Keith Dixon , 70, of Palmerston North, has also passed away. Dixon was a tutor for 10 months at MacMurray House (Junior Campus) along with Rex McIntosh and Ian Wilson, his pedo buddies. He is accused of sexually assaulting 3 boys under the age of 16 in 1973 and 1974. He is a multi-recidivist, he had already been convicted and served time in prison for similar facts (indecent assault and indecent act) in 1997 and 2014. It is hard to believe that he would have made only one victim in Dilworth, especially in the vicinity of two other child rapists during the same period. In 2012, one of his victims who had become an adult decided to report the abuse to Derek Firth, the chairman of the board. This individual stated in a letter that he was happy to meet with the victim but that it would be “nothing more than a courtesy” and that he should not expect any compensation. No comment.

Rex Clarence McIntoshwas a Dilworth housemaster as well as a junior choir director, art teacher and diving instructor. He is also deceased. He was facing 7 charges of indecent assault on 5 boys between 1972 and 1980. One of them was less than 12 years old at the time of the facts, the others between 14 and 16 years old. He also denied all the accusations against him. Very proud of his status as an actor and director for more than 35 years, he played mainly in Camelot, Evita, Chicago, ‘Allo ‘Allo! (a film for which he was named best actor at the NAPTA Awards). There is some question as to the actual number of casualties he may have had throughout his career having taught in several schools after Dilworth: Botany Downs Secondary College, Ormiston Senior College, Pakuranga College, Ruawai College.

On the official list of Dilworth’s pedos, we found only 7 of them, 4 are still missing. Their names are hidden, the law allows it. What is still amazing is to see once again how easily their filthy actions, which were well known to all, were swept under the carpet: resignation, dismissal… but as usual in this kind of case, no complaint, no denunciation in time to the police. We move or delete, as simple. On the other hand, it is much less comfortable for the victims who will have to carry this burden all their life; some of them may not even have the opportunity one day to see their torturers punished. Class action suits are no longer possible, and the victims’ lawyers (GCA Lawyers) say that legal battles can be costly and time-consuming, especially against “deep-pocketed defendants” like Dilworth. Appalling, appalling!
